The Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015 was signed into law on 28th December, 2015 (McCormick). Notably, the legislation was confirmed nine months after it was initially introduced in March. Given the American legislative system, it was surprising that the bill was passed so quickly. The reason for this was that the bill was co-sponsored by Democrat and Republican representatives. Numerous studies had shown that pieces of plastic were infiltrating into the country’s water bodies (McCormick). Since the bill focused on an urgent environmental matter, it was able to get bipartisan support. On the other hand, the Main Street Fairness Act has not been passed since it does not involve all states. Also, the bill does not introduce new tax obligations (Moreno). If I were a Senator, I would have voted for the Microbead Act since it has environmental implications. The Main Street Fairness Act will become law when more states become members of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project.
Question 2
The case presents legal issues with regards to privacy and other constitutional rights. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution guaranteed the freedom of expression. Hence, it was illegal to expect or require employees to avoid posting any negative comments on social media. Workers had the right to express themselves freely. Any form of victimization would be tantamount to a violation of the freedom of speech. Tort law in the U.S. contained provisions guaranteeing the right to privacy. Aggrieved parties were allowed to file lawsuits if their private information was accessed. Monitoring social media networks and possessing login/passwords were crude violations of privacy. As a new worker at StuffMart, I had a constitutional basis to refuse to comply with the company’s Social Media Policies.
