Her father, a wealthy man, left her family to work in the gold mines and has not been heard from since. She hopes that she will be reunited with her family someday. She works in a mill for one year and then travels to Massachusetts to work for a factory.

In Lyddie's social conscience, a thirteen-year-old girl in the early 1800's is sent off to work at a mill. The mill overseer is an arsehole, but Lyddie learns to read and becomes the best worker in the mill. Eventually, she speaks out against her boss, and she is fired, but not before she gets a chance to attend Oberlin College.
