Life as a child during World War I

Growing Up During World War I

For me, growing up during World War I would have been intolerable. After reading accounts of the conflict, I imagine that, if I were a child, life would be very challenging. Even grownups were terrified by the events that were occurring during this time. Scenes of people dying or going missing would have devastated me as a kid and disrupted my emotional equilibrium. As a child during the First World War, I would have experienced job disruption because the time was marked by evacuations, which disrupted the lives of many families. For instance, during the era, the British government often evacuated children and sent them to places of safety occasioned by the fear of German bombings. Also, parents would organize to send their children to relatives overseas or in the countryside where they believed security existed. This meant a disruption of work for the parents who would not go to work to fend for us.

Affected Leisure Time

Secondly, I would not have enjoyed my leisure time as a child if I lived during the First World War. This is because the state of security was appalling and the sound of bombs and grenades, as well as gunshots everywhere, would not have permitted me to enjoy my leisure peacefully. I like playing with other kids in an environment that permit this. It was arguably a tough period in the history of children since the war affected their lives in an adverse manner including denying them the chance to enjoy their leisure.

Impact on Education

My education and schooling would also not have been any better if I lived as a child during World War I. The German bombings destroyed one in five of Britain's schools resulting in requisition of several children by the administration. The remaining schools took in several children affected by the war, and this led to overcrowding of children in classes. I also realized that at the end of the war, many children did not attain the required levels of numeracy and literacy. Therefore, living as a child during such a time would have meant that I also would not have reached the desired level of literacy and numeracy.

Future Prospects

The only future prospects I would have as a child during the war would be if and only if I got evacuated to stay with my relatives in a far land like Canada and New Zealand. To say the least, the future would have gotten so dark if I lived during the First World War than living now. I can only envision what the future would have held for an uneducated and unhealthy me during the era!
