The first stage: Leadership
The first stage of the process, leadership, is defined by a person's inability to recognize growth-promoting opportunities in their immediate environment. Those going through the "I don't know what I don't know" stage of the process might not realize how much of an impact they are having on other people. The degree of participation a person has in their professions is a critical factor in determining their ability to see and take advantage of possibilities in their environment that can lead to advancement. High job involvement in a way may limit a person’s ability to identify ways in which they can be influential to others. Self-efficacy also determines how open person is to new opportunities (Pendergrass 1). Self-efficacy is determined by personal confidence a person has about his or her performance. High conviction about the quality of their work enables them to take on new opportunities and hence grow as leaders, while low confidence limits a person’s willingness to take on new opportunities that may lead to growth.
The second phase: "I know what I don’t know"
The second phase referred to as “I know what I don’t know” is a proactive attitude in learning that leads to growth through the application of lessons learned with time. In order to grow as a leader, a person needs to consistently show proactiveness in putting into practice information they have that can create change (Markman 1). Recognizing the importance of managing relationships is also essential in enabling a person to identify and take on new opportunities in their work. An individual’s perception also determines how quickly they can identify and take on new opportunities in the course of their work. A shorter perception process enables a person readily identify and take on new opportunities that lead to growth.
