Italian Food and DOP Labels
Italian food is always distinctive and incredibly well-liked worldwide. Consequently, they are recognized by DOP labels. All Italian packaged foods must meet the Denominazione di Origine Protetta (Protected Designation of Origin) standards for certification. The foods that bear this label are of a high standard, each component is sampled and tracked using a serial number, the ingredients must originate from a known, precise source that has been approved by the government, and the foods are produced in a specific location to preserve their qualitative characteristics. Buffalo mozzarella, Parmigiano cheese, Marzano tomatoes, and basil are a few examples of DOP foods.
Importance of the Region of Production
Firstly, the region of production of these foods is very crucial. From agriculture, it is clear every area has the different type of soil, and it influences the quality of crops to be produced. For instance, Parmigiano Cheese making is tracked down from where the grass that cows feed on come from. If cows come to a specific region and feed grass from another area, it will be against the law hence won't meet the regulations and standards of the cheese.
High Standards and Authenticity
Furthermore, the Italian dishes are always graded to be of high standards. Many imposters use the labels to sell their products. Sometimes, the recipes are associated with the class. It is due to the rules and regulations that have been placed to assist in quality production. There is a high maintenance of originality and more robust flavor. For example, the San Marzano Tomatoes have a unique and different taste from other tomatoes.
Food and Differentiation of North and South Italy
According to the book, 'The Globalizing of Italian Food,' food has played a big role in differentiation of the North and South of Italy. People from the north are associated with traditional products like Gorgonzola cheese while the south sushi which is cosmopolitan.
Threats to Original Ingredients
However, even if there is a high appreciation of these dishes, there is big threat of disappearance of the original ingredients due to globalization.
Food as a Form of Identification
Lastly, in normal life, food is also used for identification. Pizza is very famous among the young people, and whenever one is seen around the outlets, it's obvious that you come from a high social class.
