Possessing intercultural communication competency is being able to use communication techniques from various cultural contexts. Understanding the diverse cultures is necessary to comprehend the varying meanings and unexpected hurdles to open communication (Kealey, Daniel 15). Since one encounters various cultures at work, school, and other locations, intercultural communication is crucial in all facets of life. Cultural differences can take many different shapes. For instance, one culture can be concerned about men working with women, while another might be worried about long-term business connections versus short-term ones.
I believe that my intercultural communication proficiency is progressing nicely in terms of my personal development. This is because I have the motivation to interact with other people from different cultures (Martin, Judith 7). Motivation drives my desire to foster my intercultural relationship. Moreover, my healthy curiosity drives me towards intercultural encounters to learn more about self and others. My intrinsic communication makes my intercultural communication voluntary, earning process and rewarding.
Reaching a certain level of intercultural communication is important. I would love to learn to understand and speak the different languages of my friends. For instance, if I am working with people from different countries, I will know how a particular culture interacts with women, and that may help me choose the different ways of approaching them. Furthermore, it would contribute to improving my negotiating ability in the workforce by increasing my marketability. It would also improve my accomplishment more compared to the professional and academic achievements (Kealey, Daniel 16). I would be able to appreciate the different views of other students by recognizing their cultural backgrounds. This is because online classrooms are limited to words alone. Moreover, I think if am more versed with more languages I will become more marketable and appealing to potential employers.
