My understanding of the function of humanities is that they are used to teach us more about our cultural values which are quite essential in our ordinary life, for example, how to respect the norms that exist within our cultures for better relationships with others to be custodians of our cultures. Social science is a tool to create harmony within the society by enhancing healthy relationships among communities or elements of the society, from the word ‘social’ which mean ways of interaction. Natural sciences help us to appreciate nature by letting us know more about it, for instance how we differ from each other biologically, in order to respect everyone’s condition depending on nature.
My misconceptions of the three disciplines are that social scientists are antisocial, have no laws, and are not hypothesis-driven. The misconception that I have about natural sciences is that they are too broad and rely on theories; some of which are under criticism. My misconception about humanities is that most of them have insufficient data.
They are beneficial to our society in that they all deal with human relations within the society and their study enhances peace and harmony when applied daily life. They bolster each other’s significance by use of knowledge gained from each and relating to human society.
I study both humanities and social sciences. The knowledge of the other discipline will help me grasp my course of study better since all the three of them deal with humans and their environment. The knowledge gained from each applies to the others. The interrelationship among the disciplines as discussed above makes the perspective in my discipline more explainable by the sharing of knowledge.
