When any professional works in any organization’s settings, general workplace ethics and professional ethics are the laws that must be observed, obeyed, and put into effect throughout time.
However, when the working and working environment are founded on significant public interest, the necessity of ethical working would increase. In order to serve the greater good of the public, one must be loyal to their work and to the people they are intended to represent.
Honesty and integrity are required in double the amount when it comes to ethical behavior in the health and medical fields and adherence to the code of conduct.
In this treatise, a case study related to health and medical filed professionals will be examined and the conclusion will be made from the examination of the case. It is important to understand the case study. Here is a brief summary of the case:
Brief Summary of the Case
In the case study, there is a character named Jocelyn who is a graduate scientist. She is working in a healthcare company called HealthKit, which manufactures medical equipment. While evaluating a respirator designed by the company, she believes that it has a technical error. She thinks that the relief valve that protects the infant’s lungs from overpressure may have been incorrectly placed which can cause high pressure levels. Following the ethical principles, Jocelyn reports the issue to the management but the company management does not take any measures to resolve the issue reported by Jocelyn. On the other hand, no incidences of overpressure causing infant harm have been reported. It is the time to decide what he has to do with the case mentioned in the case study.
What Do You Chose to Do Next?
There are very strict rules and a code of conduct that implies to me as a health and medical related professional that is scientist/engineer. Undoubtedly, I am supposed to follow the code of conduct to maintain high ethics at workplace and during the working conditions. Therefore, in the above mentioned scenario I would like to choose to insist the organization’s management to stop production of the above mentioned faulty respirator at any cost. Indeed, as an engineering professional it is my prime responsibility to maintain high level of honesty and integrity. At the same time, the code of conduct bounds that engineering professionals have a duty to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct including openness, fairness, honesty and integrity. Moreover, an engineering professional is supposed to avoid deception and take steps to prevent or report corrupt practices or professional misconduct. Above case study also comes to the corrupt practices or professional misconduct definition. Therefore, I would like to report above mentioned case to the concerned authorities. Moreover, I think that the concerned authorities should take strict and serious actions against the company.
Rationale
Every professional has to follow the code of conduct and ethical principles. Therefore, it is not a grave issue for the wellbeing of the society to report the above mentioned case to the concerned authorities. It will not only save patients’ life but also satisfy my moral integrity.
