Pinterest: A Gendered Space
Pinterest has been branded as a gendered space social media platform due to increased number of female users as compared to male users. Pinterest has become popular due to increased number of social marketing users. The recent study has shown that most of the shared content at Pinterest has dictated the rise in gendered space. Most of the prevalent marketing topics shared on Pinterest comprise of fashion, crafts, lifestyle, food, and interior design (Johnston, 2015). Most of these topics feature women-related needs and interests, thus leading to men exclusion from the platform.
Gender Inequality on Pinterest
The increased number of women users due to the content shared on Pinterest indicates a significant gender inequality among users. The gendered divide at Pinterest has led to criticism from most of the social media users. Criticism from the social society prove that the arising number of female users is an undesirable concern for Pinterest. After discovering the female gender domination in the platform, Pinterest has launched an intensive marketing effort to promote men users. The marketing strategies include; hiring a new marketing manager, change of marketing imagery to feature more men, and inspiring a wide display of pin topics (Dixon & Correa, 2014).
