Introduction
It was on October 18th, 1868, shortly after the publishing of Therese Raquin, an essay published by Zola after a few months. This was his weekly column in the newspaper La Tribune.
The Workplace World
The article was about a common pastime in the Paris suburbs. Zola had stayed out with people who had dressed up for Sunday until late in the evening. He could see them if they were dressed properly. The essay attempts to represent the workplace world from the perspective of those who do not seem to be who they portray themselves to be. They seem to be marginalized in the heart and soul while claiming to be happy on the outside.
Murder as a Theme
The original and basic idea in this context is murder although there are some other instances of adultery and betrayal along with crimes. However, murder is so much pronounced to the extent that such prominent people like Therese and Laurent commit suicide. They are said to feel very weary and disheartened, something that brought a great desire to need rest for nothing. Additionally, death is seen as the only mode of getting satisfaction, especially after Camille's murder. It is declared that "the aim of all life is death" which implies the every organism is seeking to get back or rather restore itself to the previous nonexistence state. Mme Raquin also mourned her son's death who was brutally killed.
Betrayal in the Studio
On betrayal, the writer writes that in a given studio, there were two women along with three men, held to betray a resemblance of a family since they looked like what Freudian termed as the likeness of "uncanny" that was representing "same thing constant recurrence."
Zola's Perspective
Firstly, from Zola's perspective, the setting of suburban appears to him as a fraternal site. A place that possesses harmony as well as inspiring right in the subject of a sober pacifism kind that he had claimed to have experienced in a previous "Causerie" which was published on June 25th. Agreement with the Writer
I totally agree with the whole idea and atmosphere created by the writer. The oppression being portrayed in the play resembles the present situation in our society. The prostitutes being talked about in the script, the same situations they are having is the same challenges that face them today. The same suicide cases are being heard day in day out everywhere in the world. The same thing being talked about in the play that people commit suicide just to rest and forget things that happen in life appears to be the reasons why people are committing suicide at a very high rate nowadays.
Zola's Real Society
Zola has tried to give out the picture of a real society in his article that he wrote on 18th, October 1868, some months after Therese Raquin publication. He published the article in his weekly part in the newspaper La Tribune. The main idea of the writing is to project the murder into the light of which it is still happening in today's society. He has given instances of these crimes along with betrayal situations. There are so many cases of deaths that emanate from committing suicide as well as brutal ones. Those who commit suicide mostly argue that it is the only way to get the rest they want and forget.
