Sexual selection in humans: a reflection of human mating and social systems
Sexually motivated selection is typical in all living creatures. Therefore, it is significant to understand various traits that affect the processes of selecting a mate. The behaviors vary depending with sex and in most cases do result in more sexual attraction while maintaining the survival rates. Selection based on physical appearance and body conformation has continually evolved triggering unhealthy completion between individuals. Breast in women vary in size depending with genes, but relatively big breasts are perceived to attract the attention of more men hence more chance to secure a sex mate. Some women look for ways to enlarge their breasts through plastic surgery and application of chemicals that have predisposed them to risk of dying (Geary et al. 396-401). Therefore, the rate of evolution and competition among sex is becoming unhealthy every day. In the past years, a breast size was not a consideration towards selecting a mate as long as siblings could be breastfed well. The same completion is also present in males where relatively large and robust body attracts more sex partners.
This physical trait is critical in the modern society and ladies are working so hard to win the attention of the opposite gender. Large breast increases the chances of securing more mates that admire them. The competition is intra-sexual selection where females are competing among themselves to make them more presentable to men. Attempts to win more men results in conflicts and at times death when stronger individuals eliminate the weak giving them priority to be productive as well as gaining the monopoly power. The reproductive value increases as men can secure some women who are fertile and bear more kids. Males from different parts of the world admit to being attracted by the size of breasts. Roundness, size of the nipples is a significant element that helps female gain monopoly in finding mates. Women present themselves to men stimulating the attraction that results in reproduction. The sexual selection based on the physical features is essential; the participant can change accordingly to gain the competitive advantage over others (Campbell par.5).
Evolution of human beings is believed to have begun long ago when their bodies were covered with hair. As the environment changed the intelligence of man evolved and physical and psychological changes took place. However, there are no material changes that are occurring to human today, but the reproduction and transfer of genes from one generation to another are influencing the overall performance of humankind. In the recent past, men are more attracted to women in their natural setting just as it used to happen during the ages of ape. Apes are closer to humankind, and their sexual selection tends to relate that of a human. Mates are chosen according to their maturity and presence of all reproductive organs that enhance reproduction. Natural selection has also affected evolution, and these species adapt to their habitats. Sexual preference in chimpanzees and apes is entirely different, healthy and those do survive hard living conditions are selected, and their genes spread to the future generations (Dixson 913). This ensures that there is continuity in life and inheritance of certain desirable traits in the future. Selection and need to defend the territories through male-male competition is coherent in both species.
This kind of sexual selection has resulted in more complication in the society. The mating system has affected the social network where a man can marry several women. Although nature has a way of balancing both gender and how they relate to procreate, males are under high pressure to sustain their demand in their community to reproduce. The section encourages polygamy since a single man can be attracted to several ladies with attractive breasts hence distributing their genes across the environment. The competition between women has widened, and only the beautiful chosen for reproduction. The application of technology to modify the natural beauty shows that females are in a desperate situation and are working hard to be more presentable to men as possible (Puts 33). These are significant changes in the society I relation to the past generation where the selection was made depending on the discipline.
In conclusion, it’s evident that physical traits such as the size of the breast in ladies and robust and well-built body in men influence sexual selection in the society. This selection affects the kind of genes that dominate and those that become distinct as a result of natural selection. When choosing a mate, it is significant to consider the parenting ability, reproductive success and the ancestral background among other factors that could result in desired offspring’s. Evolution in human beings is a continuous process, and there is a need to secure the future by selecting the best mate that could give rise to more intelligent people.
