Differences and similarities between the Fortifications of Knossos and Mycenae

The Appreciation of Art and the Similarities Between Knossos and Mycenae

The appreciation of art has persisted throughout history, and artists have used this term to express the knowledge they believe is important to humanity. Knossos and Mycenae, two of Greece's most important archeological sites, have been the subject of many similarities over the years. The similarities and variations between the original inhabitants have been well recorded. The fortification of Knossos was almost non-existent; as a civilized people, the Knossos was suspected to be a religious or economic body rather than a political one. Considering the lack of proper fortification and weapons suggested that attack from enemies was not in their minds and war was not something they were preparing for or had an interest. Such an aspect was contrary to the Mycenae who were more aggressive and firm with their living (Kleiner 53). The people of Mycenae equipped themselves in their fortification of the mighty great walls were a part of their defense accompanied with weapons of defense in case of war. Consequently, having had various enemies, they build Lion's gate right before the Trojan war as a safety measure.

The Religious Practices and Artistic Love Shared by Knossos and Mycenae

The main similarity between the people of Knossos and Mycenae is in their religious practices of worshiping their idol gods and mostly goddesses. The people believe in religion, and it has brought people together. Similarly, Knossos and Mycenae share a mutual love for art as seen in their ancient drawing craft seen on their walls and all over their surroundings. Similar paintings and carved drawings of men and women in their natural state were a sign of their appreciation for nature and humanity. The two archeological sites were successful in their economic goals, but the Knossos was not a fortress per say having had no form of defense mechanisms put it in place, and very little weapon possession proves so while the Mycenae was a fortress and was fully equipped. Even with all the fortification the Mycenae was still defeated and reduced to nothing in an attack.

The Role of Fortresses in Ancient Times

Rulers widely use fortresses as a defense against their enemies, such fortresses as the wooden legionary fortresses of hippie Valley at Harltern and Oberaden used other refurbished methods of protection against their enemies such as the box rampant (Bishop 18). These came from the earthen bank plan. Tying polls to their neighbors with timbers that were placed horizontally in such a way that the enemy would entrap if and when they attack. Compared to other such fortresses the Knossos and Mycenae are a bit lax on their fortification and especially Knossos. Mycenae was more equipped and rightly called a fortress as opposed to the Knossos who were assumed to have had a fortress due to their success and life of wealth.

Building a Sustainable Fortress

For a sustainable fortress, proper measures should take place regarding the area to be covered and most importantly the material to use. High walls are mandatory as a protective gear; weapons should have an arsenal in the town that is I am to fortify. Posting of guards in every entrance to the town and traps set for unsuspecting enemies around the wall such as unexpected ditches to catch the enemy off guard. To build a fortress that is dependable and efficient means to take note of every loophole that the enemy may use in attacks. Ensuring that in the case of an invasion everything is on point.
