While dealing with patients from diverse cultures, there are some norms that must be followed in a healthcare setting. These are significant principles that should be considered when working with people from various cultures. It is critical to be sensitive in areas such as pain evaluation, maintaining eye contact with the patient, and maintaining space when handling or interviewing the patient (ACOG, 2011). Additional factors to examine include how the patient's culture interprets the disease or illness, as well as the ethnic groups' beliefs about health maintenance (ACOG, 2011). It is critical to evaluate what Sue Li considers important as an Asian American during an interview. The ability to communicate and understand English should be considered when interviewing Sue Li. Many people might not be aware of the risks associated with a particular disease or the significance of the preventive healthcare. It is therefore vital to understand Sue Li’s cultural believes concerning health and specific diseases to establish if they hold same ideas to western medicine.
Abuse Assessment Screen
Abuse assessment screen is a tool uses by nurses in a healthcare setting. The role of the tool is to screen and detect an occurrence of domestic violence among patients (ACOG, 2011). The tool is formatted in such a way that one cannot have the feeling of being singled out. The questions in this tool are used to determine the seriousness of domestic violence and how recent it did occur (ACOG, 2011). Since nurses are reporters, they are mandated by the law to report any abuse be it to a child, adult, mean or women if they suspect or have knowledge of the occurrence of such cases.
