In search of lasting friendships
In search of a friendship that will last throughout life, a majority of the university students join sororities and fraternities. Nonetheless, a good percentage of these students get caught in situations that are life-threatening because they are unaware of the commitments to which they swear themselves at the helm of joining sororities and fraternities.\u00a0 The primary ideology behind joining the sororities and fraternities is to form associations in which the members become one big family at heart (Torbenson, Craig, and Gregory 32). However, most members of the sorority and fraternity have betrayed the ideals of the Greek life while advocating for togetherness, popularity, and status.
The issue of hazing
For the purpose of establishing university assessment guidelines, do sororities and fraternities abide by rules of conduct? Of course, they do not, given that a larger percentage of the sororities and fraternities engage in the sadistic ritual of hazing. For clarity, hazing is an intentional action that is habitually undertaken by the active members of a sorority and fraternity to inflict mental and physical discomfort embarrassment and harassment upon the future members. The main focus and issues that sororities and fraternities should stress most are bonding relationships amongst sisters and brothers rather than allowing this idea to be abused and neglected by hazing (Torbenson, Craig, and Gregory 36). How can the endangerment and discomfort of pledges be ignored during hazing? The lack of responsibility and supervision has caused hazing to development through stages into a seriously dangerous issue which members of this sitting have not always addressed.\u00a0 Students who have gained control of the sororities and fraternities have gone full speed ahead at coming up with their own rules. Due to their desire for status and popularity, they choose to imperil and take advantage of pledges and thus fail to acknowledge the emotional discomfort and humiliation that pledges can be made to endure. Therefore, not must option has been left other than coming up with assessment guidelines for all sororities and fraternities affiliated to this university.
Presentation of the Criteria
To begin with, the fraternity and sorority experience must be designed to align with the core values of the university.\u00a0 The university should make it mandatory to have an assessment and awards of the sorority and fraternity communities in order to appraise and recognize the shared goals and values.
The first form of appraisal should be civic engagement which will ensure that each fraternity and sorority engages in comprehensive and meaningful community partnerships and civic engagement. Secondly, there should be leadership development assessment which will be aimed at ensuring that the fraternities and sororities have the right leadership besides promoting leadership development and opportunities for its members.
Thirdly, all sororities and fraternities should showcase convincing willingness in intellectual development and academic support. This can be spearheaded by establishing and maintaining a scholarship program aimed at enhancing the academic success of the members of the sororities and the fraternities besides making sure that they contribute to the university's academic mission. The fourth assessment should be of value integration. This will enhance teaching and upholding of acceptable values of the sorority and fraternity communities. Each member and leadership of the fraternities will be made to understand the consequences of their actions and the implications they may have within the fraternity.
To promote the real ideologies of the sororities and fraternities as well as encourage adherence to the set guidelines by all members, the university should initiate the 'Overall Recognition' recognition awards. This awards will go to the sorority and fraternity that have demonstrated exemplary or excellent achievement in upholding the values and ideas of a fraternity and sorority community as defined by the university.
