Most importantly, there is the witness who resists and defends the target. Therefore, the critical step of testimonies and case studies as used by Barbara breaks down the bullying process, and it makes it easier to analyze such cases.

In this case, the family plays a particularly significant role, for instance, a child will learn from the parents how to treat others. Barbara firmly points out that bullying is a learned behavior and when a child sees the father insult another person because they are different, learning occurs. On the other hand, a child who observes the parent stand up against sexist or racist comments even in uncomfortable situations will learn the same and will become an active witness, that is, stand up against bullying. The teacher behavior also influences bullying cases, for instance, a teacher who criticizes a student who is different encourages the others to do so. The peers are probably the most crucial reason why many students are bullies or henchmen because students seek to fit in and be popular. Therefore, most of the henchmen are forced in bullying because they seek to be associated with the bully, who is stronger and popular.
