Various societies around the world have over the years, undergone immense transformation and evolution. China, in 1000 CE, for instance, was considered as one of the most advanced nation across the globe and this was measured in the form of commercialization and urbanization. Cultural activities vary depending on tribal and ethnic groups. The Bayeux Tapestry, for instance, is an outcome of cultural prowess in the ancient Europe. The designs that are on the Bayeux Tapestry are embroidered and not woven. In this paper, a comparative analysis is made between the Beijing Qingming Scroll and the Baxeaux Tapestry.

Discussion

The Bayeux Tapestry provides an overview of the events leading to the battle of Hastings as well as the events that led to the conquest of England that focused on William, the Duke of Normandy. Little is known about where and who produced the needle work. However, most scholars, in the modern day, argue that it was designed and produced in England. The textile art is provides a clear picture of cultural activities of people in the ancient period[1]. During the Song (Sung) Dynasty, advanced technology was applicable in the fields of art, printing and agriculture. Just like the producers of the Bayeux Tapestry, Chinese people in the Song Dynasty were also involved in tapestry and this had an impact on their clothing[2].

One of the needle works that have historically as a famous masterpiece is the Bayeux Tapestry. The textile art tells of a story of a battle that was triggered by the King of Denmark who seized the kingdom of England. All the events leading to the Norman conquest of England are portrayed in the Tapestry and they culminate in the Battle of the Hastings. The Kingdom of England retaliated after it was attacked by the Normans from Denmark. Harold was the leader of a greater England[3]. According to the textile art, it is evident that in the ancient times, battles and wars were a part of the lives of people around the world. The death of Harold was a major blow to England in that it left it leaderless for a long duration. In 1066, William was crowned as the King of England, succeeding Harold.

Both the the Beijing Qingming Scroll and the Baxeaux Tapestry provide a tale of the cultures of people in two different divides of the world. The Song Dynasty of China, for instance, had different forms of artworks and clothing. The dynasty mainly adopted foreign garments that were mainly silk clothing[4]. During this period, technology was highly advanced and this contributed to an enhancement in productivity in fields such as agriculture and printing. Government offices were staffed by highly skilled and educated scholars. The Song Dynasty culture implies that China was one of the advanced nations during the ancient period. The period witnessed a significant growth in population and this was attributed to factors such as excellent agricultural techniques, economic growth and political stability. Baxeaux Tapestry was produced in the 11th

century and it provided an overview of the cultures of the ancient England[5]. The needle work is sophisticated and at the same time unique and this is highlighted by the embroidering of the designs rather than being woven.

Various cultural values are on display in the two stories. According to the Beijing Qingming Scroll, the Song Dynasty was united and it embraced technology in handling agricultural activities[6]. Rules and regulations were imposed in the community and individuals were supposed to abide by them. Only the highly educated and skilled scholars were employed in the upper levels of governments. As for the Baxeaux Tapestry, it is evident that textile art has been in existence since time in memorial. Tapestry was used primarily by people in Europe in displaying their day to day activities. The events leading to the Battle of the Hastings, for instance, is effectively highlight in the Baxeaux Tapestry[7]. In the ancient Europe, kingdoms that won several battled were always feared and were considered as mighty. Some of the designs that were used in the Baxeaux Tapestry have over the years been emulated by artists in various parts around the world.

The Song Dynasty mainly relied on agricultural activities and iron working for their economic growth. Most of their clothing were foreign and were an emulation of the western culture. In both China and Europe, dynasties and kingdoms went into battles with the aim of protecting their resources and having conquest over their opponents[8]. During the 11th century, population in China and Europe grew significantly and this was attributed to factors such as economic growth, enhanced healthcare and improved agricultural practices due to technological advancement.

century. China, in 1000 CE was one of the advanced societies around world. Baxeaux Tapestry as a textile art is a masterpiece whose fame and uniqueness will be felt in years to come.
