The Dashaway Club

Over the years, the organization grew to include members from other areas of the country. In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower awarded the organization a Congressional charter.

This opportunity was presented to Jacob Riis, a muckraking journalist and social activist who had moved to the United States from Denmark. He had learned about journalism from his father, a police reporter in New York City.

Riis' book was an important milestone in the progressive movement. He continued to write against child labor laws and advocated for health code regulations, as well as making city classrooms available for boys' clubs. His heavy workload caused him to develop heart disease. He retired from the Federated Boys' Clubs in 1909.

Character Counts! as a national initiative
Character education was created in 1992 by the Josephson Institute, and has grown into one of the world's largest and most successful programs. It focuses on the Six Pillars of Character, and includes a curriculum that teaches lessons and activities about each. It also incorporates role-playing scenarios that teach students to develop these qualities. It reaches millions of youth each year and is recognized in the United States by the White House. Every October, the President signs a proclamation declaring the third week of October as National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week, which recognizes character education programs and activities.

The program was originally developed for the U.S. Army, where it's used on more than 100 Army installations, involving more than 100,000 children of soldiers. Since then, it's spread across the nation, and has been incorporated into numerous schools and districts. In addition to schools and districts, Character Counts! has been adapted for use in public settings, including Santa Clara County public employee ethics workshops.
