The distinctive gait of Bonnie and Clyde was caused by Clyde's time in prison. He was sentenced to fourteen years in prison for auto theft and robbery. While incarcerated, he made the mistake of chopping off his big toe and a portion of his second toe with an axe. Though it was not clear why he did it, he thought the cut would get him transferred to a less-hardened facility. As a result, his stride became incredibly shortened and he was unable to wear shoes while driving. Although it was not clear if Methvin was the sole killer of the two Bonnie and Clyde murders, historians and the general public still believe the former gangster was a part of the crime spree. Methvin was born on April 8, 1912. He joined the Barrow gang and went on the run with Bonnie and Clyde. While on the run, Methvin tried to flag down a passing motorist at gunpoint. However, the motorist did not pull over and stepped on the gas instead.When Bonnie and Clyde were on the run, Methvin's father made a deal with the police to set up an ambush for them. However, the plan backfired and they were killed by the police. Though Methvin received a pardon in Texas for killing Constable Cal Campbell, he was not pardoned in Oklahoma. Methvin was eventually given a life sentence for the fatal shooting.Although Methvin's father had no prior knowledge of Bonnie and Clyde, he had helped Methvin's mother get an early release. The plan was simple: Bonnie and Clyde would slow down and talk to Methvin's father. If this plan worked, the officers would have clear shots at the escaped criminals.Methvin's father knew that his son was about to be caught, so he contacted law enforcement and agreed to negotiate a deal with Ivy Methvin. The deal was done a day before Bonnie and Clyde were caught.
