I personally believe that it was not right for Nora to leave her husband and children. Nora should have behaved like a responsible mother and a wife. Children deserve parental care and this comes from both the mother and the father. As such, provided a woman has children, the first consideration should be the safety of her kids. Nora says that her husband (Torvald) is more of a stranger. Therefore, the question regards why she opts to leave her children with a stranger. Besides, just because Torvald gets angered at times, it does not make her a bad person. Emotions are common with almost all human beings, and the aim should be to solve issues without necessarily causing social tragedies. I find it careless that Nora did not even think of talking about the situation, but instead chose to leave. She left no room for their marriage to find a cure and left her three children without motherly care. While Nora’s pain and quest for freedom can be felt, her leaving was essentially premature and not justified.
A Doll’s House is not a comedy but rather a tragedy. The plot followed has a pattern of social disintegration and a tragic ending. The decision of Nora to walk out of her home at night, along with leaving her three children is undesirable and sad. At a time when divorce was largely stigmatized, I think Henrik Ibsen should have focused on how to strengthen the institution of marriage, rather than advocating for divorce. If the activities in the play were to be analyzed with eyes of a conservative person, it is tragic for a woman to leave her home. Nora should have undoubtedly loved her protective husband, her pretty little kids, and her beautiful, presentable house. By choosing to leave the marriage, Nora might knowingly enter an apparently hostile world and begin struggling with life instead of enjoying the comfort of her husband and children. As such, I would characterize the play as pessimistic. The behavior of Nora is pessimistic and irrational and could be likened to an insane woman, or the Victorian model of the hysterical.
