For a long time, I believed that developmental psychology is only concerned with the changes in cognitive development when people transition from childhood to adulthood. Both the video and the study text point out clearly that this sub-discipline is not only concerned with the cognitive development of adolescents but children and older people too. Additionally, they describe developmental psychology as concerned with the physical changes that take place in individuals as they transition from one stage of life to another. From the two sources, it emerges that there are various fields of developmental psychology that catch peoples’ attention over time. Different developmental psychologists major in these various fields (Checklist 11.1 144). This essay is a reaction paper on the two sources.
New information that I have got from the video is that developmental psychology is closely related to statistics and most psychologists in this sub-discipline are interested in statistics (Naylor and Patrick). Dr Naylor and Dr Patrick express their interest in experimental methods and statistics. From the reading text, I have learned that professionals in the field of developmental psychology can also access career opportunities as professors in other fields such as business, education, and medicine. Career opportunities are not just limited to teaching and research in the discipline of psychology.
The new information I got from the two sources portray this sub-discipline as an interesting area I would like to pursue. This information shows that developmental psychology is a field with vast knowledge about the changes that take place in the human lifespan. The study of human development is a field I would like to pursue because it enables one to acquire a good approach towards life and how to handle the changes that occur in everyday life.
