Advanced Practice Nursing: Essentials for Role Development

Nursing Professions

Nursing professions necessitate a wide range of skills and expertise to ensure that every effort is made to achieve positive outcomes and improve the quality of care provided to patients.

A Nurse's Multiple Tasks

A nurse's job is a combination of numerous tasks that deal with people's lives: advocate, educator, and researcher. A nurse in these professions must strive for excellence, be passionate about their work, have a clear vision and strategic focus, and be committed to improving nursing practice.

Achieving Nursing Aims

These characteristics are required to achieve the nursing aims.

Advocacy, Education, and Research

Advocacy without commitment may fail to achieve the desired health care outcomes. Similarly, a nurse as an educator and researcher must demonstrate commitment in their work in order to get positive results. Passion is critical since it drives nurses to challenge themselves and set their sights on higher goals. A clear vision and strategic focus ensure that nurses do not lose sight of what is important and remember the reason for their work. A clear vision allows goals to be set and varied strategies implemented in order to realize them. More importantly, these roles aim to improve work through the promotion of evidence-based nursing practice.

Nursing Role as an Educator and Researcher

The nursing role of an educator and researcher requires commitment to excellence, a clear vision, and strategic focus. Nurse educators must be able to impart their knowledge and experience to patients for helping them keep diseases and dangers for their health at bay, as well as to nursing trainees to ensure that they uphold high-quality standards and improve care outcomes for patients. The role of a researcher incorporates various attributes including passion for their work and the commitment to promoting evidence-based nursing practice (Joel 198). Nursing research aims to identify new methods, protocols, and practices that improve health care for patients and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of nurses in their work.

A Passionate and Committed Nurse

During my internship, I met a nurse who was passionate and committed to her work. She developed a health advocacy campaign for elderly people that did not have adequate support systems in their homes, especially when they were facing health challenges. Having been brought up in a family with several elderly people, I found that her attributes of commitment to excellence, passion about work, and clear vision were a goal of my own. I considered her a mentor and role model in nursing advocacy.

Changes in Education

Changes in education have made a significant contribution to influencing nursing roles. Nursing students are able to specialize and focus on specific areas of nursing practice in their studies; hence, there are nurses specializing in diverse fields such as pediatric, psychiatric, geriatric, forensic, and family nursing, among many other specialties. Education also requires nurses to incorporate educational, professional, and technical skills in discharging their roles (Masters 270). Therefore, nurse trainees are subjected to various training programs, including practical experiences in healthcare institutions such as hospitals and community-based clinics.

Progressive Development and Assessment

Education emphasizes the progressive development and assessment of nurses to ensure that they are competent in discharging their roles. Therefore, education becomes an integral part of nursing practice since there is always something new to learn from their work and new experience in the nursing environment to receive. Newcomers are often subjected to a systematic induction process to ensure they are compatible and competent in discharging their roles. These processes include orientation training, shadowing senior nurses, and mentoring programs.
