The term diversity refers to the presence of individuals of various backgrounds and races in an institution or community. Individuals in a complex world would most likely have different thoughts and behave accordingly as a result of cultural differences (Banks 1). There must be something about a community that brings diverse people together. In a church, for example, Christians are united by Christ, as mentioned in the book of Galatians 3: 28, “In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” The diversity in our churches today, brought by factors such as globalization and urbanization, has various advantages to both the church and the community as a whole if it is embraced. The following are some of the benefits of diversity in places of worship;
Diversity reduces cases of prejudice
Prejudice is known as giving an opinion which is not supported with experience. Churches provides an individual with the opportunity to mix with each other and learn from them irrespective of their background. It gives people an experience on cultural practices of different people and therefore can comment on them based on the facts they learned. If people have to worship in groups depending on their cultural practices or races, cases of segregation will emerge. They will not be comfortable to mix with others of diverse race or even gender. This gap can only be filled if churches allow people of different background share their opinions together during worshiping.
Diversity enhances unity
In Mark 12: 31, it is written that Christians should love their neighbors as they love themselves. A church that brought people of diverse backgrounds improves love which results into unity among the church members (Park &Young 1). As church members try to live Christ-like lives where love is given the priority, they become united. Our love for God can only be demonstrated if we love all kinds of people around us. Therefore the more the people possess differences in the church, the more they come united.
Diversity expands knowledge
People learn about other’s cultural practices and language if they interact together (Park &Young 8). The relationships that occurs between people of unique culture and races in churches enable them to get answers to the myths and suspicions they had on others and can now live a relaxed life. Besides, a person can gain professional knowledge if they share ideas in places of worship.
Diversity enables churches to serve their fundamental mission.
According to Matthew 28:19, the Bible requires Christians to spread the gospel and reach all nations. A church comprised of the diverse population, therefore, meets the expectation of Christ being served by church members. Diversity enables many people to become Christ’ followers when collected together and being taught the ways of Christ in the church.
Diversity attracts many people
The church is meant to reach its community, and if it does not include everyone, then it is compromised. Imagine a church being led by only men. Women will be discouraged to attend such church since they feel not recognized. The case is similar to church services being conducted by a group from one race. The others will not be attracted to such church. The more the church is diverse, the more people get attracted to it since they feel represented (Park &Young 18).
