Poverty
Poverty is the state of being economically inadequate or inability to afford normal basic needs, and living at the expense of fewer than two dollars per day. However, the definition of poverty differs from one country to another. The living standards of someone considered poor in the United States could be better than living standards of someone considered poor in another country, say India, or any other third world country in the world. The poor in the United States are mostly the middle class because in the three classes of America the middle class is the lowest after the working class and the wealthy group. The majority of low-income earners in the United States work in places like grocery stores and might have multiple jobs. In the States, those who depend on welfare and live in public houses are the poor since they enjoy tax deduction and rental subsidies.
Welfare
Welfare is the general wellbeing of a person or a society. In America, the public assistance and federal aid by the government to citizens is welfare. Millions of poor households are supported to improve their health and education in Mexico and Brazil while in India policymakers work on inclusive growth, integrating the poor in the fast-growing economy. All these show different ideas of countries’ definitions or understanding of welfare, but some of these ideas, like India’s, is flawed. The social contract between the government and the poor gives a guaranteed minimum citizen’s income and also includes the right to human dignity exceeding the political rituals of voting. The poor peoples’ movements whereby they rage against deprivation and displacement demand such social contracts. This creates welfare for all people in countries whereby if it’s not provided freely by the government the poor people demand it through movements.
