Thomas Jefferson's Views on Slavery
Thomas Jefferson was one leader who fought to end slavery in the early years. In one of his letters, he suggests that that the talents of the Black people are not a guarantee for their rights. He even argues that Sir Isaac Newton was an intelligent person and he did not receive any significant recognition. He had to explain his letter about the talents of the black people as it could have been misinterpreted by many people. People would have understood that he was trying to say that the Black Americans were not treated as they deserved due to the abilities they had. Such thoughts could have been supported by the fact he banned slavery in Virginia. He did several things that showed his dislike for slavery. To practically end slavery, he advocated for training, emancipation, and colonization of slaves. Moreover, he would have used such arguments to justify his practices in bondage. Therefore, we can say that there was a complex relationship between Thomas Jefferson and slavery. He fought very hard to bring to end practice of injustice such as slavery while he owned several slaves. In most of his adult life, he had slaves that were African-American. At the age of 24, he acquired 52 slaves from his father. Additionally, in 1773 he also inherited 135 slaves from his father in law. He even suspected that the intelligence of the African-American slaves was inferior. After his death, some slaves of his slaves were sold to pay some of his debts.
Jefferson's Contribution to Equality and Justice
We can conclude that Thomas Jefferson was a true warrior who believed in equality, liberty, and justice. He fought hard to end slavery and even came with the Declaration for Independence. This declaration stated all men either black or white were created equal and the Creator endowed each of them with individual rights that are unalienable. The declaration was a success to some extent, For example, Ignatius Sancho was allowed to vote in British election although he was a Briton of Africa. Ignatius Sancho was a symbol of humanity for the African and immorality or inhumanity of slave trade.
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. The primary purpose of the document was to declare that the colonies needed to be treated justly. They had to be independent and free from Britain rules that were barbaric such as slavery. The declaration was meant to give reasons why the colonies needed to be free from Britain. It says that all people have equal rights that cannot be taken away from them. However, when the Declaration was initially written it excluded Native Americans, women, and African-Americans. Therefore, it is right to say that some original Americans were left out in the privileged category of men by the Declaration. These people were given some rights, but they did not get equal and similar rights with those who are rich and white. This is why the Declaration requires maintenance and revision. By doing this, those involved have secured equality and liberty for all despite their social status or color. They are working to ensure that all people are included in the Declaration and treated with humanity.
Conclusion
In response to this, Douglass coined a natural law that was based on arguments against slavery. In his law, he expressed his strong faith in civilization and progress of history. He argued that slavery was backwardness and a significant hindrance to progress in history. Moreover, he believed this progress and God would bring justice, the realization of truth and brotherhood among men. He firmly believed that there were strong forces that were operating towards ensuring those excluded in the Declaration would gain their independence and freedom. In conclusion, I would say that the arguments of Douglass were real and valid. However, believing only would never be a solution — those who were excluded needed to speak out and support each other as they fought for their rights.
