The Protestant Reformation

In the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation occurred almost simultaneously in many countries and even within the catholic roman church.  The revolution was spearheaded by the renowned lawyer, Martin Luther among other leaders.  The whole idea behind the protest was the justification by faith alone, the authority of the Bible alone, and the priesthood of all believers as established by Luther (You Tube 2018). In the essay is a discussion of the various leaders and the actual places the Reformation took place.

The protestant reformation by Ulrich Zwingli in Switzerland, 1484-1531. The leader was a humanities scholar who spoke bloody and wrote profoundly about corruption in the church, permitting the clergy to marry, and use of symbolism in worshipping places and the idea of the last supper as a reminder meal. Zwingli stressed on the simplified way of worship where medieval traditions ceased. In one meeting at the Marburg Castle, he disagreed with Luther on the symbolism of the last supper where he saw the bread and wine as symbols of body and blood of Christ (You Tube, 2018).

John Calvin was a reformist lawyer in Geneva. He advocated for a theology that followed the moral behavior to the letter where any sin indeed illegal. One rule made was strict adherence to the Mosaic Law on Sunday where attending work or sinful indulgence and blasphemy was punishable by death. He is the brain behind Presbyterian churches wherein church reside authority; every church has its pastor, it has land and other riches, and presbyters lead all matters in the congregation  (Campbell 2018).

Henry, the 8th (1509-1547) reigned in England. He is popularly known for being a polygamist and separating the church in England from the main Catholic Church. When he into power, he married the Argonaut woman who did not bore him a son and therefore decided to remarry, an action resented by the pope. The remarrying resulted in Henry declaring the independence of the church in England although it still followed the Catholic doctrines.

It is apparent that different leaders saw some defects in the Roman Catholic Churches which resulted in a difference in opinions and subsequent separation (You Tube 2018).
