Some of the critical things that I have learned from the book as well as the video, include the holistic role that a school psychologist plays in the profession, schools, other institutions, to parents, teachers, students as well as the entire community at large. The statistics regarding school psychology is another remarkable fact and also an eye-opener for any student like to be used in a career decision. The information from the text and video has had a significant impact on influencing my decision whether school psychology is a worthwhile profession to pursue.
Apart from the daily roles that a school psychology has to carry out I am quite impressed with the statistical information on the profession which has revealed important evidence on the number of school psychology workers, their gender, age composition, salary and the likelihood of employment opportunities for a student that pursues the profession in the present and future. More so, I think to be a psychologist with the ability to understand, communicate and recognize more than one or two languages other than US English offers more significant opportunity for securing a job in the profession as close to 20% of the population in the country speak another language other than the national language.
Overall, I think school psychology is an integral sub-discipline of psychology as it relates with many people in their lives; addressing their issues at different ages besides handling problems early enough at a tender age of schooling which pins down its importance. The statistics on school psychology would be one of the strongest selling points in the profession which I was not privy to before watching the video and reading the textbook. I am increasingly convinced that I may pursue this career because of its contribution to the society from all dimensions as well as the greater likelihood of securing a position as school psychology in future.
