Plagiarism is theft of academic work and owning the idea without citing and referencing the original source of the work (Plagiarism). When borrowing another person’s work one is supposed to give them credit them by name to show that they are the original source of the message. Plagiarism is illegal and one can face punishment or even imprisonment for stealing from other people’s ideas without permission or mentioning the rightful owner. One can plagiarise knowingly or unknowingly whereby by deliberate plagiarism one knowingly fails to cite and reference the source while in accidental they forget to cite and reference the source unknowingly.
Previously I perceived plagiarism as copying word for word of the idea or the thought of the source without giving back credits to the author. However, in plagiarism even the borrowing of an idea which is paraphrased in similar words is still considered as academic theft and is illegal (Bowdoin). Even if one has borrowed the idea and put it in their own word they should mention the inventor of the idea. When one wants to use a concept or idea that he or she has seen or read in another place they should mention the name of the mentioning of the author through citation and also reference the work with full details of the original work this is in the case that on paraphrases the idea. On the other hand, when one uses word for word of what the original piece has they should put quotation marks and cite and reference the author.
Conclusion
The knowledge obtained about plagiarism teaches me on importance of not taking appraisal or credit from another person’s hard work but to motivate them to do even better work by giving them their credits and to also borrow an idea without stealing. During my course work I will not forget to cite and reference for any thought I have obtained from other authors so as to be truthful with what is rightfully mine and what other people have thought. This will in turn be a reflection of respect, integrity and honesty in the work that I will present.
