Examining Developmental, Contextual, and Historical Effects of Civic Engagement during the Transition to Adulthood: An Integrative Interdisciplinary Approach
While writing this article, John Schulenberg clearly had several aims that he want to accomplish. He has used examples where necessary and that has a great way of ensuring he delivered his point. Schulenberg starts off by letting his audience understand the importance and goals of education regardless of whether it is formal or whether it is an informal type of education. Although Schulenberg did a good job in this article and tried to cover all the primary aims of the article, he clearly could have done a much better job.
From an overview of the article, one can certainly tell that among Schulenberg’s guiding purpose in preparing this work was to help is audience better understand the importance of civil development among younger generations in the United States. Schulenberg says that the “ultimate goal of both formal and informal educational opportunities during adolescence is to prepare young people to be responsible and productive members of society” (Schulenberg). However, Schulenberg only gives one way in which young people be responsible and productive members of the society. That is to be civically engaged. “Being a responsible and productive citizen includes being civically engaged”( Schulenberg). While there many other ways young people be responsible and productive members of the society, Schulenberg only states being civically engaged. Other ways in which a young person can show that he/she is a responsible and productive member of the society can be by getting educated, running for some social position, building relationship among other ways.
