Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that is based on language that can affect the writing, spelling and reading skills. Different Intelligence and achievement instruments can be used to measure the diagnosis of learning disability Dyslexia and their cognitive abilities. They include Wood Johnson III and WIAT (Wechsler Individual Achievement Test) (Gregory, 2014)
I. Intelligence Tests
The Wood Johnson III tests can be used to measure the Cognitive abilities of the leaner. In this test process, learners are typically given several tests on different topics. These include spatial relations and verbal comprehension learning. The tests may take between sixty to ninety minutes.
Example
WJ III of Cognitive Abilities. This instrument offers a set of test that can be administered to measure the academic and intellectual achievements of a child. These tests have been structured specifically to measure the learners’ cognitive abilities as well as other aspects that relate to their cognitive functioning. It assess the reasoning, knowledge, memory, auditory, processing, speed, and spatial thinking (Woodcock, McGrew, " Mather, 2001).
ii. Achievements testing
The WIAT is an instrument that is used to assess the achievement of learners aged between four years to adulthood.
Examples
a. WIAT-II; this is a battery that is customarily administered on learners to assess their achievement levels. It offers composite scores in four different educational achievement domains that include mathematics, reading, oral language, and written language. This instrument is used to make a meaningful comparison between ability performance and achievement identifying any discrepancy between the two (Wechsler, 2001).
b. Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement: This instrument is used to measure the academic achievement of learners in mathematics, reading, written language, and knowledge. The tests are included with questions that are normally read aloud to the learners by the examiner, and the norm-referenced scoring is applied.
