The Effects of School Structural and Individual Factors on Academic Achievement of African American Students

Concerning Melissa`s plan to study the factors that may be associated with criminal behavior in rural, low-income parts of Northwest Florida, the article by Fries et al. (2013) can be used to respond to the student`s study. The aim of the research in the article was to find out the predictors of criminal recidivism among a group of offenders by use of file information hailed from forensic studies about the participant offenders. The participants in the study involved criminal offenders that had been convicted in Switzerland. The predictors or factors associated with the participants` recidivism included the vulnerability of younger aged offenders. Participants that had earlier served serious conviction were prone to dangerous recurrence of crime (Fries et al., 2013).


            The study by Stewart (2007) applies to the observation that Marilyn wants to make regarding the academic achievement of African American (AA) students of low social economic status. Stewart`s study examines the student and school structural effects on the academic accomplishment of adolescent AA high school students. The study argues that various characteristics at the institutional level and factors surrounding the individual AA students affect their success in academics (Stewart, 2007). Determinants in the school include the bonding and school interrelation exhibited by fellow students, instructors, and the administration to an AA learner. The author argues that at the individual level, the predictors of academic achievement include student`s efforts, good company, and functional relationship between a care provider and a student. The study also stresses the importance of paying attention to the social economic background of the AA students during bonding at the school structural level (Stewart, 2007).


            Lester`s study regarding employee welfare in the workplace can be supported by the survey conducted by Taris " Schreurs (2009). The research aimed at testing a hypothesis on happy-productive employees, their well-being and impact on organizational performance. The authors asserted that happy employees are productive and it is therefore imperative for organizations to improve the well-being of employees. Taris " Schreurs (2009) measured job-specific worker welfare using the levels of career satisfaction and rate of emotional fatigue of employees in the organization. The study concluded that enhancing a worker`s well-being does not only lead to heightened productivity among employees, but also positive consequences for corporations and their clients.
