Overview some key points you found in this section of the reading. Pollan asserts that there are many options of diets available for human consumptions but humans tend to have little information about what should be consumed. He further points out at the popularity of corn as the botanical winner and the primary sweetener thus the reason behind its increased cultivation (18). Another significant point Pollan highlights the fact that even processed foods are connected to organic foods that sustain human life (17). He also notes that corn is genetically produced hence the corn met in the supermarkets is not similar to that which grows naturally. He narrates that the love for money has interfered with the production of food such as induced fattening of calves to make more profit out of it.
The information I already know and what I found interesting and new
All along, I have been aware of the fact that most of the foods people consume are not naturally grown. There has been a recent increase in GMOs that are associated with lifestyle diseases such as cancer. The use of fertilizers and pesticides has also led to an increase in chemicals in plants. I find the widespread use of corn as a sweetener and starch interesting. All I have always believed is that sugar is the primary sweetener in almost all products. I have learned that corn is an essential product in America because of its numerous uses. Even though I was aware of the GMOs, I did not know that it had a severe effect on corns too. Arguing that the corn grown by farmers is not the same as the one found in the supermarkets sends a clear message that no safe food can be found either in the restaurants or supermarkets.
