Slang words are commonly used along with other English words as part of the language. These words in most scenarios are used casually in everyday speech and are easily understood depending on the context of the word. These words a time can be used to mean different things, and therefore, the listener has to be careful in placing the word correctly according to the intended context.
There are very many slang words, but my favorite of them all is “lit.” It appeals to me first because of how easily the word can be said and second, how flexible its use is. The slang word lit has evolved. For over a century it was used to mean intoxicated or a situation where one is so intoxicated that normal words cannot provide a description. An example of how the slang can be used to mean intoxication is; “After smoking, they were so lit they couldn’t trace their way home.” However, the word has acquired a different and broader meaning. “Lit” is now being used to mean very exciting. Its meaning also lies along the lines of excellence.
As an English word, “lit” is the past tense of the verb light, which is to illuminate or cast light on something. “Lit” also defines the look in someone’s face upon sudden happiness. Therefore, the slang word derives its meaning from the two definitions. In most cases, the slang word is used in situations involving parties. Common statements include, “the party was lit”; used to mean it was an exciting party while the statement; “The commentary on the radio was lit” shows that the commentator’s work was excellent.
From the context, the slang word is commonly used among the younger generation and further explains why I am fond of the word. One should, however, not confuse the slang word’s meaning with its English meaning. Otherwise, the information will be distorted.
