The lecture today delved into the origins and components of romantic ballet, a dance that started in the 19th century. The lecture class concentrated on the roots of history, the reasons for its success and its debut by prominent actors. The purpose of ballet was to represent both art and literature as a form of expression. Also, by using complex methods, it became a medium for dramatic storytelling. Supernaturalism, fantasy, and exoticism during the time of romanticism, describing the battle between good and evil, and man against nature, and with that, ballet articulated these principles and ideas. One thing I learned from the lecture is that in romantic ballet, the tiptoe style of dancing later had a name called “pointework” style. Also, I learned that the first person to usher in the romantic era of the ballet dance is known as Marie Taglioni. The third aspect about the ballerina that I learned has to be the name of the costume worn by female ballet dancers, known as the romantic tutu. As such, the most impactful aspect of the lecturer involved the fact that ballet is not just a dance but an artistic expression of life concepts, spirituality, and sensuality. My reflection on the ballet dance is the importance put on the music. I noticed that music and footwork go together and set the tempo of the dance. As such, this kind of dance taught me to appreciate the intricacy and sophistication of the mysterious ballet dance. Finally, today’s lecturer proved essential to highlight the importance of acknowledging the ballet dance.
