Puritans and Separatists during the English Reformation
Puritans and separatists were the two groups which emerged during the development of the English reform. The separatists were a radical Puritans who pushed for the separation of the Church of England and form independent congregations (Roberson, n.d). Puritans, on the other hand, were the group which advocated for the purification of the Church of England from practicing the Catholic Church ideologies as they felt that it "tolerated and inclusive of practices associated with the church" (Roberson, n.d). The two groups had both similarities and differences as it will be discussed in the paper.
Similarities and Differences between Puritans and Separatists
The Puritans and separatists had similarities and differences during the reformation of the Church of England. Both opposed the practices of the Church of England. This is why they pushed and advocated for a purification and separation respectively. Both supported the reformation of the church so that it could support their ideas, practices, and thoughts. On the other hand, the way in which they sought for the Reformation was different. This results in the differences between them. The Puritans were after purifying the church. They were concerned with the "purity of worship, and doctrine and personal and group piety". The separatist's aim was to separate from the Church of England and have independent congregations. This is because they claimed that it is the spirit who founded the church and there is no way the state could. Instead of being assigned to a church parish depending on their geographical territory, the people could come together and form a church.
