Public Administration of Max Weber

Max Weber, who is a well-known economist, was born in 1864 and greatly contributed to sociology. His birthplace was Prussia, which is now Germany. He was raised in a home where his father was very interested in politics, which later in life influenced him. In 1882, Max Weber began studying law at the University of Heidelberg (Neupane,2011). Not long ago, he postponed his involvement in the service. He later returned to the University of Berlin to complete his studies. He continued to receive a Ph.D. from Max Weber, which led him to become a professor. Friedberg University hired him to teach economics the same time he got married to a distant cousin. While he was teaching, he started contributing to a social science journal. The Protestant ethic and spirit of capitalism essays made him famous. The essay explained that Protestantism led to the rise of capitalism. Max Weber has written several books on the sociology subject. The books are, the religion of China (1916), the religion of India (1916) and ancient Judaism (1918). The books explained the significance of economic and religious factors by comparing their respective religions and cultures with the cultures of the western world. He passed away in the year 1922 due to Spanish flu infection. He left some of his works unfinished. Such include economy and society which was finished by his wife(Neupane,2011).Max Weber has contributed greatly to the field of public administration. He concentrated mostly on the administrative arrangement. He divided the authority into three forms which are traditional society, legal authority, and charismatic authority. Traditional authority was based on the people obeying their leader due to their customary laws. Customary law led people on how to lead their lives. Charismatic authority is when a leader leads people because of his leadership skills. The leader personal skills lead people to follow him easily. Max Weber described legal authority as followers accepting their leader who is exercising the authority due to his legal competence. The leader does his duties led by the rules and regulations codes. Max Weber described these type of authority as bureaucracy.Max Weber model of the balanced and well-organized organization had the following characteristics: one, different departments were to employ workers who were qualified in their specific fields so that there could be a division of labor. Two, an organization would be subdivided into different parts which are headed by heads of departments. The leadership will be hierarchal by the sense that decisions will be made on top and followed by those who are at the bottom. Each lower office is given directions of what to do by the superior office.Three, workers will rise the hierarchy ladder if they are competent and perform well. Their performance will be merit if they are up for a promotion and also if they underperform they would be dismissed. Four workers are not dormant in the positions they are in they have to strive to advance their careers in the organization. Five employees will follow principles which they should practice when dealing with the situations they are faced with in the organizations. Six workers should detach their emotions while also working their leaders should lead the organization without personal consideration. All workers have to be treated equally thus reducing personal favors in workplaces.Max Weber idealism received negative criticism from fellow scholars. The scholars argued that max weber was out of touch with organization realities. The fact that max weber insisted on the formal structure of an organization whereas an organization involves the informal relationships too. The informal relationships too contribute to the productivity of a workplace to achieve its goals. Also, the idealism of max weber bureaucracy brings conflict among workers if they do not know whose authority to follow in the hierarchy.Max Weber wrote widely on productivity improvement. He discussed various factors had to be effected for an organization to achieve better productivity from employees. According to max weber Change in an organizational leadership need to be accessed very careful. A major change needs all workers to cooperate on all levels from the bottom to the upper echelon. When employees are not involved, they can lose their morale thus reduction of productivity among them. It may due to the new leader is not welcome in the organization or do not want the old leader to go. In such a situation max weber advises an organization to hire a consultant who will guide the process for management change so that the employee's morale improves or remain unchanged.Max Weber emphasized a lot on hiring an employee based on his job and qualification skills. One should be employed when he possesses the prowess required to do a certain job, not by any other factor. Max Weber worried that most workers would be employed due to their affiliations with the management. Hiring through nepotism or favoritism will reduce the workplace efficiency. Workers will always have the notion promotions and hiring will be for the family members and not based on their performance. Workers will, therefore, have low productivity in the workplace because they do not expect to advance their careers in such an organization (Sharma, 2011)According to max weber, an organization management should frequently be evaluated. Employee’s productivity depends on how they are treated by their seniors. Management attitude on employees affects their morale. If employees receive support and freely contribute in their workplace, they will have a high level of productivity. Whereas when the management is harsh and always punishes for a mistake made will always make them unhappy. They will not always anticipate working Hard for the betterment of the organization cause of the negative management attitude. Thus Max Webber advises the organization should consider changing their management style to bring a more positive style.it will lead for the workers to have a high productivity rate at work which will lead to efficiency to the organization (Sharma, 2011)ssss.In conclusion, Max Weber bureaucratic theory is widely used in modern times. Due to its insistence of having a structure of authority and have standardized procedures. The theory leads to efficiency in the organization. Also, max Webber insisted emotions should be considered at work thus not putting technology at the forefront of workers emotions expense. That’s why his theories will be followed by many organizations for many years. Reference.
