P. O. W. E. R. Learning

After reading the section, “Discovering Your Learning Styles” in Ch. 1 of P.O.W.E.R. Learning and taking the Connect quiz, answer the following in 50 to 175 words:

What is your preferred receptive learning style? Do you agree or disagree with the results? Why? (at least 50 words)

I prefer a read/write learning style which uses written material which can be used for getting information from written format.  Hence, in this instance, most of my time I spend on reading documents, books and articles which challenges me to have in depth critical analysis. The opportunity that reading and writing enables me is one where I can scribble the most important information from a text, and make a follow-up where I do not get the concept at first hand.  Writing also helps in building a reminder, based on prioritizing events and tasked based on their importance.

Based on your preferred learning style(s), what tips does the textbook offer to help you study better or learn new skills in school and at work? (at least 50 words)

From the book, I have learnt that I need to write down whatever information I learn across the syllabus or article. The essence is to jot areas which are having emphasis within a text. By doing this, my capacity to recall is enhanced as the brief notes helps in the revision process, instead of later reading the whole book.

Question 2:

After reading Ch. 8 of P.O.W.E.R. Learning, answer the following in 50 to 175 words:

Based on the information in this chapter, what strategies can you use to make good decisions and problem solve in your personal life, at school, at work, finding a job, buying a car, etc.? (at least 50 words)

Decision making is a process that requires stable state of mind, such that decisions are justified. One of the decisions is always to challenge ourselves based on our potential. Everything is always within our reach, hence when making decision, the inner feeling should guide as in life there are some decisions which we regret later. We should always shelve our ego and emotions1 when making decisions which require a stable state of the mind, in instances of group decision making, there should be active listening in order to come-up with sound decisions that is acceptable across board by all participants.

Question 3:

Answer the following question with 50-175 words:

Based on information in Carol Dweck’s video, how can understanding growth and fixed mindsets impact your learning? Provide details and examples of what you can do in your daily studies to help you have more of a growth mindset. If you would like additional information on these terms, feel free to read the Week 2 Electronic Reserve Readings. (at least 50 words)

According to Dweck, individuals with growth mindset usually develop intelligence and other capabilities over time 2. People who have growth mindset are considered go-getter and risk takers in whatever they pursue; hence fear of failure is not a deterrent to them. On another hand, the categories of people with fixed minds are ones who are risk averse hence would rather maintain the status quo than explore other avenues of reaching to their goals. A student who fails during the mid-term exams and goes an extra-mile during the remaining period of the semester trying to recover on lost marks through enrolling for remedial classes shows resilience and desire to succeed, thus depicting a growth mindset.
