Marriage as a Way of Life

Marriage as a Tradition

Marriage is one of the hallmarks of life. Under normal circumstances, when a person attains a certain age, he or she is supposed to get married. Considerably, with this perception marriage has turned out to be a tradition rather than a decision of two people that love each other. At the moment, many young people are unmarried, or they are in abusive marriages because of ignoring some of the important tenets that guide marriage (Gottman and Silver 12). I believe that marriage should not be a tradition that people have to go through but the partners must have some qualities that support each other's objectives in life.

Importance of Similar Perspectives

A marriage partner should have similar perspectives on issues. In most cases, married people experience problems with each other because of differences in attitude. Before getting a marriage partner, Strong and Cohen indicate that it is significant to learn about each (23). When partners know about each other's personalities, then it becomes easy for them to stay peacefully in marriage.

Tolerance towards Inadequacies

A marriage partner should be tolerant of the inadequacies of the other. Zibrek and McDonnell reveal that human beings have some negative tendencies (3). An ideal partner should not be negative about the shortcomings of the other. When people decide to be married, they should be ready to accept each other's inadequacies that relate to education level, physical and emotional traits.

Supportive Marriage Partners

Marriage partners should be supportive of each other. After noticing that a partner has some shortcomings, an ideal partner should focus on helping the other to overcome some of the negative experiences that relate to these inadequacies. For instance, if a partner has issues with comprehending knowledge-based training, a partner could help the other to undertake training in skills such as catering.

The Generation Gap

My perception of a marriage partner differs from that of my parents. According to my parents, a marriage partner is a way through which someone achieves a hallmark of life. For instance, my parents look at a marriage partner as someone who is supposed to help you get children.
