Based on my interaction with Percy essay, it is evident that I’m a customer of knowledge. Being the customer of knowledge entails seeing the complex symbol or ‘‘rather that which has already been formulated’’. In most cases, it is evident that I’m able to see what has been formed in my mind rather than the real thing behind the same. According to Percy, ‘‘if the place is seen by a million sightseers, a single sightseer does not receive value P but a millionth part of value P’’. There is always a unique view for every individual if they decide to directly make their personal interpretation rather than focusing on the experts’ symbolic complex. One of the key adventurous destination which I have had about since my younghood is the Yellowstone. One of my close friends inspired me to take a visit in the Yellowstone after a bunch of stories on how adventurous the place is, and the unspoiled beauty of the place. The first thing that I did before exploring the place is to seek information on the place on the internet and I understood it fully. The search for information on the same can be described as the complex symbol on what has been formulated by experts. My view on the visit was just through John Cotler formulated image which has been formed on the mind rather than the real picture of the place (Percy).
I believe I have loss sovereignty to the expert in most of the events. I tend to surrender sovereignty to the experts on what has been theorized or written about. My sovereign discovery of things on my own has been in most cases buried by the expert’s opinion. Experts usually invite the customers out to have the view after sharing the experiences which are focused on certifying the signs as genuine. Hence, in most cases, most of our experiences are focused on the certification of the expert's view are genuine. In my visit to Yellowstone, the key focus was to have a view of the place and certify the symbolic complex of the expert. I was focused on seeing the theoretical exploration of the destination to compose of verdant forests, Multicolored pools swirl, and volatile geysers launch. I waved my sovereign right to the discovery of the place to John Cotler, the internet and the theoretical concepts in the books (Percy).
The waving of the sovereign right is harmful but not always damaging. At times, it is associated with some disadvantages but beneficial in some cases. Percy suggests that waiving the sovereign right usually surrenders the present to the past and the future. The sightseer usually confirms what has been seen in the past and keep records on what will be formulated in the future using the photographs. In most cases, the sightseer is not able to see beyond what is recorded since their focus is to certify the same. In my visit to Yellow stone, I did not discover anything new since my focus was on the theoretical view of the destination. I took a lot of photographs which might be a record for the certification of the future formulations. Hence, this usually robs us the present with the focus being on the present as well as on the future. Secondly, the waiving of the sovereign right hinders one from having different views of the concept. Percy suggests that the sightseer may be aware that something is wrong but due to the theoretical concept in their mind, they may fail to speak about it in the moment. The sightseer may discover the view is not as naturally beautiful as it is, but they may fail to speak about it due to the waiving of their sovereign right to see to the expert (Esposito). The yellow stone destination may not have been as multicolored as told, unspoiled beautiful or may not have had verdant forests as told, but due to the lack of sovereign right, all I could do is to confirm.in some cases, this is not always damaging since at times the expertise are able to open the sightseers view on things which they may not be able to perceive.
Hence, it is evident that we have lost our discovery ability, personal view of things, creativity as well as our present when we waive our sovereign power. Therefore, there is a need to understand that this is the things that students lose in the education system when they highly rely on the expert view on things. A student can salvage the culture in the education system. They should recognize the role of expertise but understand that it is important to see things in their own perspective (Amoore). Confidence in their ability to discover new things is essential in viewing the things the way they are and able to create new things. Hence, it is important that every student recognize their ability to create new things and stop over-relying on the expert’s theoretical view.
