How to be a Good Student in College

College is a platform where students acquire information that transforms them into professionals. However, the performance of each student depends on the efforts invested in being a good student. For example, some of the students do not pay attention to the lessons taught in class by the tutors. Therefore, they fail to comprehend the lessons taught leading to poor performances. The primary role of the student is to work hard for the best results for a brighter future. A good student pays attention to the teacher, completes all assignments in time and reads ahead for a deeper understanding of the topics.

Excellent students attend all lessons and pay attention to the teachers “by building a stronger student-teacher interaction” (Du 610). In the current era of technology, the temptation of carrying the cellular devices to class is very high. However, such distractions tend to sway away the attention of the student leading to a poor understanding of the topic. Therefore, it is essential for the student to pay attention to the teacher and grasp a more significant part of the lesson. The understanding eases the process of revising the notes in anticipation of an exam. Lecturers communicate a substantial amount of knowledge that might not be available in the notes or course books.

Assignments assist the students in testing the level of understanding for a particular topic. For example, when the student performs well in a task, the lecturer can identify the question where the students need additional help as well as those that are clear for the whole class. One of the worst mistakes that a student can do is copying of assignments. Copying the assignments portrays the performance of the class concerning the original author of the paper. A good student “completes assignments” (Thormann and Isa 20) in time without copying from other student.

Stebbins postulates that a good college student undertakes invests in “good research standards and approved methodologies” (125), in studies. Reading ahead of the teacher prepares the mind for the future lessons. In case the student encounters a challenging topic, he/she will be in a position to ask for assistance from the teacher during the class discussions. Apart from reading ahead, the excellent student revises past papers on the topic to understand the examining criteria used by the tutors. In the end, a student with undivided attention to the teacher, reads ahead and completes all assignments in time achieves the highest grades and becomes the best student in the college.

Students should endeavor to achieve the highest performance possible. The myth that tries to depict some students as bright and others as academically challenged is a complete fallacy. Success is possible through a perfect sacrifice and dedication towards academic work. Failure to pay extra attention to class work will lead to poor understanding of the course contents and failure in the end. Therefore, students should practice on the challenging topics to excellence.
