Explanation on why the AIC's Portrait of Marevna, c. 1915 is in the AIC. Cubism is a dominant modern art movement that emerged in the twentieth century. Portrait of Marevna by Diego Rivera, circa 1915, is a cubism painting since it was formed on a flat two-dimensional surface while opposing linear perspective approaches to shadow and light. The artwork shows a new collection of photographs constructed from two-dimensional components and reflects them from different angles. In other words, the Portrait of Marevna, circa 1915, represents a new phase in the painting of fractured objects (Basiri & Mousavilar 78). Essentially, the painting eliminated the concept of the single fixed idea and focused on a multiplicity of perspectives. The portrait was reassembled from fragments of various viewpoints, which offers a platform to depict the painting from various vantage points. In reality, it is like Diego Rivera took different images at different times but of the similar object, cut them and reassembled them in an overlapping way on the flat surface. The fragmentation and reassembling of the object implied that a painting could be considered as a physical image to make subjective views of the world. When it comes to artistic style, the Portrait of Marevna depicts not only pictorial structure but also a sense of solidity, which is a common feature of cubism (Basiri & Mousavilar 83). Specifically, this painting represents the intellectual idea of the object and its association with others, a common feature associated with cubism. The Portrait of Marevna, c. 1915 is also cubist since it was painted on a single fixed perspective. The background of the portrait was developed with the standard conversion viewpoint. Consequently, the painting exemplified rounded shaped surfaces of the three-dimensional effect. Besides, Diego Rivera created the portrait at a specific time. In the end, the portrait refutes the traditional thinking that art should always reflect nature.
