Discrimination

In human social affairs

Discrimination is the taking into account or handling of making a distinction against or in favor of a person, thing, or group based on the category, class, or group to which the person, thing, or group is alleged to belong rather than on personal characteristics. Treatment of an individual or group based on their perceived or real membership in a particular social or group classification is known as discrimination. This is consistent with the assertion made by Player that prejudice is a negative action or factor. (218).

Employment discrimination

Employment discrimination is a term used to describe unfavorable treatment or consideration by companies based on a person's gender identity, sexual orientation, gender, age, race, or national origin. An occupational differentiation or earnings differential is not in and of itself a substantiation of discrimination in employment. Discrimination can be unintended and yet create disparate impact for a group or be intended as well as involve a group’s disparate treatment. Employment discrimination is, therefore, disadvantageous to specific individuals or a group of people. This paper examines extensively the steps in eliminating employment discrimination.

The Role of Documenting in Treating All Employees Equally

It is very imperative to keep an up-to-date record that is detailed for business reasons. All counseling sessions, any disciplinary actions, and performance reviews should be documented so as to eliminate employment discrimination (Rutherglen 31).

Documenting such features demonstrates that there were several attempts to help the worker reach the expected standards and provided several warnings regarding work performance. Through this, the manner in which all employees are treated is fair and consistent. Rutherglen avers that documentation is a critical aspect in the process of hiring and firing as it is critical to note what decisions are made when (35). The author further notes that the process of documentation is very important to be followed in the case of employment discrimination or the case of litigation. Additionally, an employer must ensure that the policies in the employee handbook are current and are followed exactly the same for everyone.

Sticking to Job Requirements when Hiring

Consequently, all hiring decisions should be made based on the requirements of the specific job and no other reason in order to eliminate employment discrimination. No outside factors should be taken into account as they may lead to employment discrimination. Employment discrimination does not only affect those working at the company but also potential employees at the selection and hiring stage. A discrimination lawsuit can be filed even by a person who is not an employee of an organization or a company. Therefore, an individual can file a lawsuit against an employer for not hiring them if he or she is led to believe or believes it is because of prejudice or discrimination (Ford 1381).

Conclusion

Conclusively, employment discrimination in one generation affects negatively wealth accumulation, economic opportunity, and health for later generations. Employment discrimination diminishes opportunities to deserving individuals hence affecting their financial status, economic opportunity, and wealth accumulation hence impacting negatively later generations. For instance, a parent may be denied an opportunity to be employed through discrimination and in turn will be unable to provide support for his or her children’s education or health services. Therefore, documentation and treating all employees the same as well as sticking to job requirements when hiring are critical steps in eliminating employment discrimination and ensuring impartiality is followed during hiring and firing.
