Disabilities and Reading Disorders

The Subject of Reading Disabilities

The subject of reading disabilities continues to confound many individuals. Despite widespread agreement that it exists, various people and states have different definitions of it. literacy discrepancy has historically involved a person or student who has a critical literacy problem. As a consequence of the reading difficulty, it now has more to do with IQ performance. (Reading Disabilities, n.d). Students with this issue only get assistance if they fit the latter description.

Three Different Kinds of Reading Impairments

There are three different kinds of reading impairments that can coexist, with trouble reading single words being the most prevalent. It is also the most common characteristic of dyslexia (The Reagents of the University of Michigan, 2017). Persons with dyslexia have difficulties in decoding words quickly thus resulting in an inadequate fluency which affects comprehension negatively. The second type is less common and has to do with poor language comprehension. This difficulty is noticeable when listening or reading a text. The affected children have a problem with formulating the main ideas, summaries or inference. The third type is the most severe reading disability where students show great difficulty in reading as well as language comprehension.

Learning Disability and Interventions

Learning disability is a combination of disorders in seven areas of reading, writing, and mathematics, which commonly co-arise with one another, together with a deficit in social skills (Lyon, 2015)). Therefore, policies should target early identification and intervention of the disorders. Intervention should comprise of instructions on phonological awareness, sound-symbol relationships as well as reading and comprehension.

Question #3

Reading assessments can be helpful to teachers in diagnosing dyslexia (Flynn, 2015). Children with dyslexia may replace words starting with the same letters, for example reading 'goat' instead of 'gate.' They also read hastily but inaccurately and guess words from picture cues and context. Such signs are useful in the diagnosis of dyslexia.
