Comparison of Marriage and Family

Did you know that marriage and family implies a great development in the society? The society approves status roles created by both the family and marriage. Marriageis a relationship whereby people of different gender are allowed to have children without losing their social status in the community. However, a family is a group of people joined by blood, marriage or adoption. Some supporting points used to compare both marriage and family is marriage patterns, the number of partners involved among others. However, some contrasting points include the number of same sex couples and staying single. It is therefore necessary to understand the connection between family and marriage. Families result from marriages and they create a social unit. The goal of this paper is to compare and contrast between marriage and family.

The first comparison is based on marriage Patterns. With cohabitation and single parenting, people are less motivated to get married. According to researchby Pew Research Center 55, thirty-nine percent when asked whether marriages are becoming outdated responded ‘’yes”. Therefore, cohabitation(couples sharing a house, but not marriage) results to people getting married at old age. Moreover, marriages will be delayed since people prefer education and career over marriage.

The number of partners determines the type of marriage. Monogamy and polygamy are the most commonly type of marriages practiced in the society. Social status, religious beliefs and population growth are some of the reasons which lead to a polygamous society.

Single parent homes are on the rise .According to research by Statistics Canada 230, nineteen percent of children under the age of fourteen live with a single parent .In some families, and parents are not present at all. Changes in the family structure leads to societal shifts which affect children.

Living together in a sexual relationship before marriage is a common practice by most couples. Couples livetogether in order to save money on the cost of living or to spend more time together. Cohabiting relationships result in marriage and only a sixth of couples who cohabit do not marry (U.S Census Bureau 2010). Cohabitation contributesto delayed marriages.

Some societies’ have adopted same sex marriages across the world. However, same sex couples live big cities and have increased significantly in the past decade. These increase results to more coupling and change in the marriage laws. According to a research by Biblarz and Stacey 17, children of lesbian couples are characterized by high self-esteem and poor behaviors.

More young men at the age bracket of 25 to 29 are single than young women implying the possibility of men to marry at an older age. Even though single individuals experience pressure to get married, females are more prone to insults. Women are regarded as unhappy and unable to find partners. However, men are depicted to be unmarried by choice. Some factors which influence the decision to marry or not marry include cultural and religious beliefs

In conclusion, marriage and family are important structures in most societies. Marriage and family create responsibilities accepted by the society. A family connects male and female spouses with children while marriage is a relationship whereby people of different gender are allowed to have children. Some supporting points in comparing marriage and family are marriage patterns and the number of partners involved while some contrasting points include number of the same sex couple and staying single among others.
