Attachment theory: it is a concept in the developmental psychology which explains the emotional bond that exists between a primary caregiver and the infant. It also considers the way in which the relationship between the two affects the behavior and emotional development into the adulthood stage.


Psychodynamic theory: it is a view which gives details about personality. It explains personality using conscious and unconscious forces.

Behaviourism: it is a psychological approach which takes into consideration the objective observation of the organism’s behavior. It usually uses automatic recording devices for study since it does not postulate any intervening mechanisms between the stimulating factor and the response.


Discrimination: it is the ability to identify and correctly to respond to differences among a given set of stimuli. Alternatively, it is the ability to distinguish similarities and be able to generalize.


Humanistic approach: it is a psychological concept which stresses on the study of a whole individual. It emphasizes on empathy and the goodness that exists in human behavior.


Ecological system theory: it is a theory which states that the entire process of human development is typically influenced by the interaction of different environmental systems.


Psycho-social- theory: A theory which explains eight stages of development which an individual has to go through from infancy to late adulthood. It illustrates an individual who is going through all the stages as a function of negotiating all the biological factors alongside the sociocultural forces.


Life course: A sequence of events and roles which have been socially defined which an individual goes through over time.


Ageism: it is a type of discrimination whereby individuals are discriminated based on their age. It is a situation where negative stereotypes are held regarding a given group of people based on their age.

The chapters revolve around language development, cognitive processes, emotional development and other aspects such as stereotyping that affect a child’s development.
