Fitzgerald's Background and Observations
Fitzgerald is considered to be a great American writer. During his life, he authored several books most notable was the side of paradise, Great Gatsby among many others. The author was born and raised in Alabama a state in the United States of America. In the 1930's, Fitzgerald had fully developed and could objectively understand and construe what was happening.
The Influence of Capitalism and Social Classes
In his childhood, the author could be able to observe how broke his father was; this was as a result of the limited resources. Nonetheless, the author led a good life as his mother had inherited some money from her parents. The money was enough to afford the author and his sibling's luxury and to attend good schools. During that time, capitalism was at the pick in most of the countries around the globe. Consequently, there various groups of individuals emerged. The owners of capital referred to as the bourgeoisie by Karl Marx. The bourgeoisie was considered as the wealthiest members of the society. The other class of the citizens was the proletariats who were mainly workers who only had one factor of production, labor. The proletariats spent most of their time working in the industries and manufacturing plants owned by the bourgeoisie (Marx 1887). The principal motivation for Fitzgerald to write the book on the side of paradise was as a result of having observed the reality of life.
Fitzgerald's Military Experience
When Fitzgerald was in his mid-30, it was at this stage that the society expected him to be successful. It is likely that at 30 years, one should be well settled in a career and earning good money. This was not the case for Fitzgerald, he had no hope of completing school, and therefore the only alternative he had was joining the military. Military tasks had various challenges as it is at this time that most of the military was being deployed to multiple war-torn countries to restore peace. Fitzgerald never liked his life as military personnel; he always thought that death would strike any moment. Based on the experience, the author had while in various military operations, he authored a book called the romantic egoist. The primary aim of the book is to encourage the military personnel and those willing to join the military to ensure that the American dream is achieved. Unfortunately, the book for various reasons never got to be published on time as expected. Later, the government in the bid to ensuring that the military men were motivated published the book and made several thousand copies.
The Role of Socialization
Socialization is a fundamental feature in informing the behavior of an individual. Fitzgerald grew up believing that one should live luxuriously. Subsequently, despite Fitzgerald having worked hard in the military and earning a considerable fortune, all the money was spent on luxury. After the successful sale of his book paradise, he rose to fame; traveled to various parts of the world without using his revenues prudently after a while he fell broke. Fitzgerald's case is not in isolation as that was the kind of life everyone in the mid 30's wished.
Fitzgerald's Background in Religion
America is a pluralistic society with people from various facets coexisting together. It's a country wherein the 1920's, the different rights that pertained the freedom to engage in worship were guaranteed and protected by the state. A trend had emerged, and people were beginning to align themselves with various doctrines and religions. Fitzgerald was a naturalist and had a solid background in religion (Donaldson 205). It is out of the faith and hopes illustrated in the religious book that Fitzgerald remained hopeful of becoming successful.
The Influence of Wealth and Relationships
The use of love affairs to again monetary benefits or fame was a standard feature in Alabama at the time Fitzgerald was alive. Gatsby, as asserted by various studies, was not willing to date Fitzgerald because initially, he was bankrupt. The circumstances changed when Fitzgerald's book became a success, and he rose to fame. Gatsby was now even willing to get married to him. After the two imprudently misused the money they had acquired, Gatsby left Fitzgerald (Davis 1070). Consequently, the socialization then was that riches were a more significant consideration before people date or get married.
The Influence of Drugs and Addictions
Jazz life as it was then involved in the abuse of drugs especially alcohol. It was considered that alcohol and the drugs were a trend among the celebrities. As a result, most of the people spend the majority of their money on alcohol and other hard drugs. Drugs in their nature are addictive and often lead to the destruction of the addict's lives. The money would have been utilized for commercial purposes, and the growth of one's economic life goes into waste further impoverishing them. Fitzgerald failed to become successful majorly because he became a drug addict at some point. In conclusion, Fitzgerald primary reason for his demise was due to the effects of drugs on his health.
