Alternatives to Crime

Preventing Crime Through Providing Options

There are two conditions that must be met for any crime to be committed. First, there must be a criminally motivated person—either an adult or a juvenile—and second, there must be a specific chance for the crime to be committed. However, there are practical and effective things that can be done to lessen the value of crime or the offender's incentive to perpetrate a crime. The majority of those who perpetrate crimes do so because they believe it to be their only option for meeting their daily requirements. (Clancey & Garner162). Therefore, giving offenders options can help prevent crimes. For example for the juvenile cases especially the youth, providing a proper education system that incorporates all young people will see to it that these young people have something else to do rather than the crime.

Creating Economic Opportunities to Deter Crime

Also, coming up with economic ideas that see to it people have jobs will see many being pulled out of crime. When there are jobs in any region, the majority of individuals there will opt to be employed rather than risk their lives in crime. Even if it's not the government to develop jobs, the community also can help by organizing some money-paying activities in their region to attract the youths and adults who might be tempted to join crime. Crime happens through the opportunity that is seen by the offender and if there are so many "opportunities" for crime in our society, then crime will never end (Newman, Graeme & Ronald 102). Reducing the expected rewards of crime by coming up with smart ideas such as identifying property will make the offenders see no use in stealing other people's properties since they cannot sell them. Also, making it hard for the crime-motivated individual to commit the crime will make them think of other activities rather than crime (Wortley, Richard & Townsley 26). If it becomes so hard for them and there are other opportunities in society, the individuals can opt for the safer alternative.
