About Trauma Resilience

A person's resilience

A person's resilience is their capacity to overcome challenges while maintaining their regular development. A person is considered to have trauma resilience when they encounter a painful incident in life and learn to adjust so they are not badly impacted.

Effects of sexual abuse

In spite of practicing trauma resilience, a study by Leon, Ragsdale, Miller, and Spacarelli (2007) revealed that kids with high rates of sexual abuse exhibit sexual behavior issues. The study looked at the connection between protective characteristics and trauma symptoms in young people who are extremely sensitive. The results of the research revealed that youths who experienced better parenting were less affected by traumatic events besides having good trauma resilience (Leon et al., 2007). However, youths who had little parental support and care were highly vulnerable and were negatively impacted by traumatic events. The vulnerable youths showed low trauma resilience levels. The study used 142 youth participants who had sexual behavior problems. The study concluded that youths showing significant vulnerabilities had a certain degree of protection from trauma symptomology when personal and social variables were considered. Therefore, there is a need to enhance individual, family, and social cohesion to promote trauma resilience among the youths.

Resilient coping and distress

Research conducted by Beutel, Tibubos, Klein, Schumutzer, Reiner, Kocalevent, and Brahler (2017) investigated the connection between resilient coping and distress in human beings. The study used 2508 German men and women participants aged between 14 and 92 years. The participants were grouped into those who had and had not experienced childhood adversities. The study found out that childhood adversities were linked to reduced adjustment, social support, and resilience towards diversities that occur later in life (Beutel et al., 2017). Besides, childhood diversities result in increased distress and somatoform complaints in individuals. According to the authors, resilient coping is beneficial since it leads to lower distress and buffers children from suffering emanating from childhood diversities.
