Crosley's Analysis on Privileges Based on Race
Crosley attempts to closely examine the ideology that white people have more privileges compared to other races (Crosley-Corcoran, 2014). She begins her article by explaining how her skin color did not save her from abject poverty but rather her efforts and dedication. However, she concurs that white people enjoy unearned privileges from time to time. In her analysis, she states that people tend to confuse class with race hence creating a completely different picture (Crosley-Corcoran, 2014). Crosley's argument is well thought and reliable since it is based on her real-life experience.
Agreement with Crosley's Argument
I agree with Crosley's argument that there is confusion between class and race. An individual's race is a privilege up to a limited extent. However, the word privilege is no longer valuable beyond this point since all people become equal in all aspects. This feature explains why poverty affects people from different races. The author also states that discrimination does not select an individual's aspects such as the skin color or where they were born. However, she concludes that aspects such as education equalize all people despite their physical features.
Identification of Personal Privileges
In conclusion, I believe that I have certain privileges other than skin color. I believe that I am a privileged female African American and an able-bodied person. Being born with the ability to carry out all the basic activities is an advantage since I do not have to worry about getting assistance from people all the time. Second, having gender identity is also an important privilege since one does not need to plan how to access the restrooms without invoking public outrage. Being white, male and able may be perceived as an important factor or privilege by many in society, in fact, they consider them as winning a lottery without playing (Crosley-Corcoran, 2014). However, it is noteworthy that every person is privileged in their own ways.
