Violence against Black Women in Intimate Relationships

The research was carried out to investigate intimate violence based on race, class and gender. The research was about links between types of violence. The objective was also to find a solution to this violence.

Background to the research

Feminist exertion on mistreatment on women has uncovered the wide issues about violence like the way the violence reflect gender divisions. In the narrative, it is acknowledged that analysing female experience lacking considering masculinity brings a limited accepting of the nature of violence. There is also rising acknowledgement that practice is configured and used by other divisions. The ways in which these wider divisions meet with other forms of violence have been exposed by noise research on those areas that have not usually been the focus of research. Such investigation ensures a re-think of the ways social relations are understood.

Studies carried out in the past on violence have been mainly on White populations. Other populations have been almost skipped, and where their scenarios have been integrated it has been ways that define them as essentially unexpected. The omission of Black people from much normal theorising is especially irregular, given the way in which Black people in the West are over-represented as victims and offenders within the Criminal Justice System.

There is need to investigate relations between violence within the home and in the community. Feminist study has shown that home is unsafe place for women, children and elderly, and most violence is intra-group, both home and in the community. There is great investigation on Institutional and Criminal Justice responses to violence and redress for its harmful effects.

Objectives of the Research

1. To investigate violence against Black women in intimate relationships, discussing some of the shortcomings in present conceptualisations of the crisis, and also including the view of Black men, and also Black children where possible.

2. To explore the scenery of the relationships and how the violence is understood and explained by both members of the family. There is need of conscious attempt to know how associations are filtered through the scope of race, class and gender.

3. To discover any possible links beyond the interpersonal that may tell the perceptive of violence.

4. To have the way in which the responses of professional and legislative organisations and the Criminal Justice System match the understandings of the nature of violence uncovered in the study.
