Also referred to as women’s liberation organization, feminist movement has been understood as a sequence of political revolutions basically organized by female activists. The latter seek to redefine social issues, such as conjugal rights, equal remunerations for both female and male workers, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and maternity leave. Feminism demands and priorities may vary among countries depending on cultural practices of the predominant communities. For example, feminism movement for a country may be aimed at mitigating female circumcision, while other movements may be seeking to oppose “glass ceiling” for female in other communities. Therefore, the organizations fight for the space of women in the society.
Notably, several literature works have stressed the theme of feminism as one of the hot topics in social concerns. For instance, “The Feminine Mystique”, one of the most influential literature works credited to Betty Friedan on feminist movement has steered for justice (Sayre, 2016). The work was designed in line with the second-wave of feminism in the United States, which was witnessed in the beginning of 1980s. It focused its agenda on feminist concerns, such as equal rights at workplace, sexuality, maternity leave, and more topics discussing protection of women rights. In essence, the topics covered issues from menstruation, rape, sex, and female genital mutilation.
Art has also been used as a medium for enlightening women about the role they play in socio-political arena. The traditional aim of Art in feminist movement is to build a strong awareness across the globe. For instance the “The Dinner Party”, done by Judy Chicago (1974-1979). The art is stored at Brooklyn Museum and highlighted the need to protect the rights of women in the society.
